Tower at former Avalon TVNZ base to become apartment complex

The 10-storey tower at Television New Zealand’s former Avalon hub in Lower Hutt will be converted into apartments.

Developer Ian Cassels is behind the two-year, $20 million project to gut and refit the 1970s concrete building into 68 units. Work is scheduled to begin next year.

The tower is the most prominent feature of the former TV studio complex which opened in 1975 under the then New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation as the country’s first purpose-built television centre.
